How The Increasing Number of Hacking Attacks Affects You

Any website, application, or blog you are going to build requires analysis and positioning. It’s logical that while I was searching information into this post process, I found terms related to computer attacks. Words related to hackers, phishing, passwords,  hosts, and terms about computer security. So far, normal.

The interest in hack attacks on websites

The funny thing is that those on top positions in search volume were concepts related to the act of infringing. Things like ‘how to be hacker ‘ or ‘how to attack a website ‘

Despite I was looking specifically for ‘protect my website’‘secure my WordPress’ or ‘ remove malware from my Wodpress’
So I found out that the interest of crime is much higher than the knowledge of the possible attack. Or the interest in online business protection.

It is true that, as usual, if you have never been hacked or you have never scan malware on your site security is not your top priority. However, protecting your website, blog or e-commerce is similar to paying an insurance or lead a healthy life. In the specific case of malware detection and removal, vulnerabilities and bugs, moreover, protection means to save time and money. You probably understand this better if you have been hacked and it took you hours, or days to recover your site. If you were lucky enough to restore it completely.

But going back to the topic, it is curious and worrying that the keywords related with how to attack are the top searched. Probably this is the reality of a young society, or not so young, who looks for new ways to make money. Or take out personal vendettas, professional attacks on competition or simply to try and explore an unknown and dark world.

It is important to understand one of the reasons for this growth of research about hack or attack security. Which is that each year the types of attacks diversify and increase. This makes it more likely that any person with any interest on the subject finds an attack perfect for him to run.

What types of hack attacks and infections can affect your site?

Which are the most common attacks? Some of the most used to infect cyber attacks, damage, hack into a website or information are :

  • Malware injections: a hacker finds out some bug, vulnerability or backdoor and they inject malicious software to your website. Maybe you don’t notice it at all. Maybe he or she have put that there to infect other sites and takes long to show you a Google alert or any symptom of hack.
  • Malicious Redirectsoften malicious redirects are made by hacking the .htaccess file. And it’s common that the hacker have place backdoors that will reinfect your website once you have cleaned it up. Not funny.
  • SEO Spam Injections: this can be a disaster for your analytics metrics and your web reputation. It can attack directly your analytics account in different ways as hidden text or links, keyword stuffing or link manipulation or automated queries to Google.
  • DDOS attack: This usually attacks a site causing saturation in the bandwidth. So that you can not access to it. Load times are extremely high because the system is down as it tries to process all the attack infected packets. This could affect you if the target is a website hosted in a hosting provider with insufficient bandwidth. It will impact in all customers. Or at least customers who are within the same network segment as they are sharing resources. A large number of customers typically share bandwidth so, if you have received messages from your provider about a massive attack probably they have received a DDoS to one of its customers.
  • Domain hijacking (or Pharming): is to manipulate the domain name system of a legitimate website address. With activities such as phishing or directly with the aim of attacking. The user access to a website that he considered ‘legitimate’ and he is accessing to a fake site that shares its requested data, for example.

Take action as soon as possible to avoid hacking attacks

These are just some examples. However, there are many more types of attacks. Although it is necessary to have information about it, the aim of the post is to provide a minimum information about a society where the knowledge of the internet, for good or bad, is increasing. And searches on website hacking is growing every day.

Better take action sooner rather than later, checking your site’s health with a proper website security maintenance.
