How to Stop Fake SignUps on your Site

Fake sign ups are one of the most common problems for e-commerce owners and bloggers. Any site that needs user mails and to subscribe potential customers.

There are two types of false sign ups:

  • Use of spambots. Software specifically designed to search the code of the subscription forms on your web or blog and fill your list with fake mails.
  • Users who use fake email domains to subscribe, those on this list of domain for fake emails.

Having fake sign ups is not as a malware infection. It maybe won’t put you on a blacklist or endanger the integrity of your website. But it will do your data and the statistics of your subscribers. Forget about tuning your target if you have a percentage of false information on your website.

How to stop fake signups on your website

There are two simple things you can do:

1-To avoid spambot fake signups

Add a reCAPTCHA box to your hosted subscription forms that spambots can not access.

If you use forms such as Contact Form 7 in WordPress, it is as simple as activating the ReCAPTCHA option in the Form Options. This avoids fake subscriptions. Subscribers will need to check the reCAPTCHA box to complete the subscription process.

2- To avoid signups by fake mail domains

Simply make a filter that does not accept emails from those domains. By capturing them, the user will receive a message as his mail is invalid. You will have no choice but to put a valid email. Remember to keep this list up to date.

If you suspect that you already have false signups among your users

If you already have a user list and you want to identify which ones are spam, you can do the following:

  • Look for the fake mail domains.
  • Email addresses that do not look like a real name.
  • Email whose name and surname do not match the email.
  • The confirmation IP address and the subscription IP address are different. Usually it happens that when a spambot subscribes to you list, one registers ‘falsely’ from one IP and another from another IP confirms the registration.

Lastly, remember to keep your website, blog or e-commerce safe and protect your work and your customers.
